Slurpee Run, Penang Style

Looks familiar? I think you can find a 7-11 almost anywhere in the world! We decided to have a 'slurpee run' one night, and since it's my un-official job to embarass my teenagers, I brought my camera along!

This is Rachel trying to pretend that she doesn't know me...though when four white people enter a store together here in Penang it's pretty much a given that they belong together! I am not sure why Josh is pointing out the slurpee machine - perhaps he is practicing to work on 'Wheel of Fortune' someday...

Now we are on our way home with the slurpees - the straw really wasn't in Rachel's nose...it was the camera angle....I promise...



And, finally, this is what we drove to 7-11. It's a Toyota Unser - kind of a van/SUV cross. It's got a nice strong air-conditioner - my favorite part of the vehicle. And it seats 8 people, so if you are ever in our neck of the woods we'll be sure to pick you up and let you stay for a while. The steering wheel is on the 'wrong' side, of course, but I am SO thankful that it is an automatic as I'm pretty sure that I would be terrible at left handed gear shifting.


So there's a little slice of life in Penang that's not so different than life in Canada. Well, except for it's February and it's 32 degrees outside and slurpees melt really fast here in February...and, well, you get the picture...

YOU HAVE 7-11!!!!!! You are so lucky!! They don't have that here, nor do they have slurpees! When we went to Australia we practically had an accident cuz we were so excited to see one there and had to have a slurpee fix.... but do they have DQ? Cuz we don't and we think it should go world-wide!

Hmmm. Slurpee runs! We are going to have to do one when we come just for old times sake! Nice ride dad! Is it better than the van?

(and just a little side note to say that Rachel loves to hijack other people's blogs!) On the morning of Good Friday we joined some new friends (Lisa and her children Julia and Daniel) for a hike to Turtle Beach. As is every day, it was hot, but we all enjoyed it a lot. Entering the park - the 'office' took our names and information like they do for all who take this hike. Good to know someone will come looking for you if you don't come back!! Penang Skies

We get such beautiful skies here in Penang and I wanted to give you a glimpse of some of them.... Sunrises are so beautiful - our camera is full of them! Sunsets too - WOW! God's creative beauty is amazing! And we love watching the storms roll in. The texture of the water changes and from our 16th floor apartment we can almost see the wall of rain as it comes our way. We're into the rainy season now (some say, anyway) so we're having rain nearly every day. I am very much appreciating how it cools the air down, even a little bit. From beautiful Penang! Karin

Settling into life in Penang

Well, it's been two weeks since we arrived and we are beginning to feel somewhat settled. Many have requested photos and asked questions so I hope that this post will give you a feel for our journey so far. We arrived at Calgary International Airport on January 6 at 4:30 pm. We checked our 10 bags in with no problems and then spent some time with friends and families who had come to see us off. THANK YOU to all our loved ones who came to see us off. There were many tears, but it meant so much to us that you all made the time to come. (We're also so thankful to those who helped us in so many ways the last few days - hosting us in their home, running last minute errands, taking responsibility for some 'stuff' we had to get out of our house...it seemed that the list of final jobs would never end!)
